An outsider with no prior connections to the industry, Triptii Dimri’s rise to fame has been swift and phenomenal. While she was gradually gaining recognition for her performances, she took a bold step by accepting a role in director Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s controversial film Animal (2023). Even though the outcome was uncertain at first, it ultimately paid off, making her a national sensation almost overnight.
Now, the actor, who hails from Garhwal in Uttarakhand, is set to appear in her second film this year: director Raaj Shaandilyaa’s comedy Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video, in which she will share the screen with Rajkummar Rao. Besides, she has at least two more highly anticipated projects lined up — Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 and Dhadak 2.

However, Triptii recently shared that she initially had no passion for acting and didn’t consider it a career option. “I just wanted to do something different. I was never academically good. I told my parents I was going to give it (modelling) a try,” she said during a chat with The Hollywood Reporter India. She also mentioned that her parents were initially quite scared about her moving to Mumbai, especially since she was a shy, introverted person who had never stepped out of Delhi. They also were not happy with her decision to enter the industry or modelling at first. Nevertheless, she decided to pursue it so that she wouldn’t regret it later.
Once she made up her mind, Triptii began auditioning extensively for films and TV serials and eventually landed a key role in Poster Boys (2017), acting alongside Sunny Deol, Bobby Deol and Shreyas Talpade. However, she found it extremely difficult, as she didn’t know any of the industry terms or their abbreviations. “I didn’t know the meaning of DOP (director of photography) or what a POV (point-of-view) shot was. I didn’t perform well in it because I didn’t know the ‘a’ of acting,” she admitted. Nonetheless, working with the Deols helped ease her parents’ concerns. It was during this time that she decided to give acting a real chance.
Recalling that she had initially failed the audition for Laila Majnu (2018), Triptii said that the casting director of the movie later chanced upon her and asked her to audition again saying she looked Kashmiri enough. She eventually got the part and the movie gave her a big break as a leading lady.
“Even then, I didn’t know acting. I would sit in workshops with my director Sajid Ali and (co-star) Avinash Tiwary and they would have discussions on acting, backstory and characterisations. I would just sit there, blank-faced, not knowing anything. I would go home and cry thinking, ‘Am I doing the right thing?’ because I didn’t understand what they were saying or their language,” she said, adding that although part of her wanted to quit, another part pushed her to continue.
